Along the Adyar Rivers southern
bank are the Theosophical Societys 350 acres of
parks and forests, home to the Great Banyan Tree which
is over 400 years old and the second biggest in India.
Under its branches, crowds of up to 3,000 used to listen
to speeches by leaders of the Theosophical movement. In
1989 the trees core was uprooted in a storm but
careful replanting has restored the landmark.
Visit the Buddhist shrine and see the Bodhi tree, grown
from a sapling descended from the original tree under
which the Buddha found enlightenment. |
